Abstract | School districts across North Carolina are implementing co-teaching practices as a part of inclusive education. This study analyzed the effectiveness of co-teaching as an instructional delivery method and the components needed for success. This study also examined the defined roles needed between the general education teacher and the special education teacher. The study identified obstacles faced within this delivery model. Data collection for this study included both qualitative and quantitative analysis. The data included survey and focus group responses from general education and special education teachers. The quantitative data consisted of End of Grade state test scores for students receiving co-teaching and those receiving instruction outside of the classroom in a special education classroom for both English Language Arts and math. The findings from the analysis indicated a divide with perception of roles with instructional responsibilities in the classroom. Results from qualitative analysis revealed the need for improved professional development in a collaborative approach. Further results from quantitative analysis revealed co-teaching practices had a significant impact mostly in the area of English Language Arts.
