AbstractCareer and technical education generally has focused on helping people to understand the relationship between education and work to acquire employment skills. There is a need for action to ensure that the programs being offered in Career and Technical Education (CTE) align with the needs of the 21st century workforce. This research will attempted to answer whether a suburban CTE program, an urban CTE program, and an international CTE program align with 21st century skills by evaluating these programs using a model based on content analysis of each program's curriculum for select courses. This research collected curriculum from two Long Island suburban schools; a suburban Long Island CTE school; the academies of the city of Nashville, TN; and the country of Finland. Using the NVIVO program, research was done to find if the skills needed in the 21st century matched the curriculum that these organizations were providing. The findings were based on a wide array of text searches done to each of the curriculums in addition to gathering data from the U.S. Department of Labor and the Finnish National Board of Education. The research indicated that Finland had a more complete national curriculum that encouraged students to attend vocational schools when compared to the United States. Recommendations included creating a national CTE curriculum in the United States, approving free community college to high school graduates, and less standardized testing.
