AbstractThe transformational management philosophy creates a culture that has purpose, moral standards, and high achievement outcomes (Yukl, 2006). The primary focus of transformational management theory is to be humane, while exhibiting behavioral characteristics of kindness, care, compassion, and principled centeredness (ethical disposition) designed to mitigate issues of institutional turbulence, while promoting organizational change. The author of this study explored the following questions within two community colleges and one community college system: (1) In the community college, what is the organizational culture of evidence found concerning institutional common vision, collegial relations, inclusive discourse, caring culture, pedagogy leadership, and sustainability planning? And, (2) what would be the implications concerning the usage of Transformational Management Theory (TMT) during the strategic planning organizational decision-making process? The subsequent essential strategies were used to collect, analyze, and synthesize the findings related to effective strategic planning for community colleges, founded upon transformational management theory: a) Secondary Data Collection Approach (official documents and archived research data), b) Criteria of Soundness (credibility, transferability, dependability, confirmability, and utilization/application/action orientation), c) TMT Inventory (an assessment document used to evaluate community college strategic planning data), and d) Trustworthiness (researcher-as-detective, rule out alternative explanations, extended fieldwork, and triangulation). Overall, the TMT findings yield that Valencia Community College Strategic Plan 2008-2013 and California Community Colleges Advancing Student Success in the California Community Colleges Plan exhibited significant evidence concerning institutional common vision, collegial relations, inclusive discourse, caring culture, pedagogy leadership, and sustainability planning. Whereas, Brookdale Community College The Jubilee Strategic Plan 2013-2017 produced less substantial evidence concerning the TMT principles. In general, the implication is that transformational management theory as a systems change process provides the 21st Century community college with a humanistic transformative management strategy designed to govern institutional effectiveness.
