AbstractThis was a hermeneutic-phenomenological study on homeless students' life-world in urban, postsecondary public educational institutions. The sample population comprised 10 male and female Hispanic, Black, and Caucasian homeless student participants enrolled in professional and academic programs in postsecondary public vocational institutions (PSPVIs) and/or the urban public community colleges (UPCCs). The qualitative methodology and instruments for data collection consisted of open-ended survey questionnaires requiring respondents' handwritten narrations. Data were processed using a conventional cut-and-paste manual method assisted by NVivo 10 analytical software. The findings ascribed participants' homelessness to poverty, joblessness, drug addiction, deconstruction of filial relationships, bad decisions and choices, abuses of illicit substances, and the result of bad fortunes. The study participants concealed and camouflaged their homeless existential conditions exacerbated by factors such as personal impoverishment, inflexible structural policies, victimization, and loss of their basic freedoms. Further, homeless students did socialize with their peers, and esteemed their instructors. Lastly, the participants had futuristic aspirations and determination to emerge from homeless life-world. The knowledge and insights from this study may facilitate educational leaders, faculty, and other stakeholders who would consider crafting and designing policies and services for homeless students in postsecondary public education institutions. The study's implications and application stand to stimulate and expand the discourse in academia; and inform and train the faculty, the admissions staff, and the academic administrators on understanding, treating, and serving the homeless students on their campuses.
