AbstractThe purpose of this current case study was to document how women presidents of private Texas colleges and universities describe their leadership. The percentage of Texas women presidents (24.3%) closely mirrors the U.S. national average (26.4%) of women presidents of colleges and universities, yet the percentage of Texas women presidents of private colleges and universities (11.1%) does not reflect the U.S. national average of women presidents of private colleges and universities (21.9%). Rich descriptions of leadership, experiences, and successes are critical to understanding the role women presidents serve in private higher education. The current study took a unique approach in examining the presidents. Along with the presidents, 15 followers were also interviewed in order to describe the president's leadership from a followership perspective. As a result, the following key findings evolved from the current study including open, collaborative leadership styles, strong work ethics, collaboration, work-life balance, early career paths, family, faith and spiritual presence, community, high energy levels, challenges, and lack of mentors. The current study also discovered the followers' demonstrated commonalities in describing their presidents as open and collaborative. The outcome of the current study revealed the presidents were able to self-identify their leadership style in correlation with their follower's perspectives as open, collaborative, and participatory.
