AbstractTechnology is playing an increasingly large role in children's reading, writing and daily lives. In the last year use of tablet computers by five to 15-year-olds has increased three-fold (14% to 42%) and 28% of three to four-year-olds use a tablet computer. However, little attention has been paid to the impact of new technologies on children's literacy practices. This is despite the fact that technology has become available that is more age-appropriate for children in the early years--particularly with the introduction of touch-screen devices. This report explores the activities parents engage in at home that support children's language and literacy development, and how these activities relate to communication and language outcomes at five years old. It also investigates how often parents use books and touch-screen devices (e.g. tablet computers or Smartphones) to engage in a variety of activities with their child at home, as well as parents' attitudes towards books and technology. An appendix includes communication and language outcomes as well as additional tables and data. [For the practitioner survey, see ED560655.] (ERIC).
