AbstractThis quantitative study attempted to understand the factors that influence Minnesota community and technical college students to pursue Information Technology (IT) certification. The study investigated the problem of determining the factors that influence Minnesota community and technical college students to pursue IT certification along with their academic degree and thereby increase their chances of gaining employment and increasing completion rates for the college resulting in increased state funding. The study replicated a prior study and used a previously validated survey developed through mixed methods research. Theory of Planned Behavior was used in determining the factors using the constructs found in the theory and two additional constructs, Affect and Cognition. The goal of the study was to help community and technical college instructors influence student decisions regarding pursing IT certifications. This influence may lead to higher job placement after graduation resulting in an increase in completion rates for each college. The purpose of the study was to create a foundation for instructors in IT programs throughout the MnSCU system to influence students in pursing IT certification. The study found that the construct of Attitude has the greatest effect on the decision to pursue IT certification. Students in the study indicated that money and resources are the largest constraint. These finding were in line with the findings of prior research. Professors were found to influence the decision more than other referent groups.
