AbstractThis phenomenological research explored the lived experiences of successful African American men attending a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) in the Midwest. The guiding questions for the study were (a) What positive characteristics do successful African American men demonstrate at HBCUs that offset major problems, concerns, and barriers that African American men may face in college? (b) What supportive aspects do HBCUs provide to the African American male students that are instrumental in acquiring a college degree? (c) What real problems pertaining to academic success and graduation are eliminated for the African American male student by being enrolled at a HBCU? The study sought to provide a more informed understanding of effective practices that motivate African American men to persist toward a college degree. The study also sought to identify academic, social, and key events that lead African American men to persist toward a college degree. Six academically successfully African American male students were interviewed. A demographic survey provided information regarding the students' backgrounds. The data analysis revealed four emergent themes: transitional attributes, religion, influences and academic aspirations. Results indicated that the academic and social integration contributed to their academic success. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
