Abstract | This issue in the "Connect" series is a field report that discusses how a student's personal competencies--cognitive, metacognitive, motivational, and social/emotional--propel learning and other forms of goal attainment. These personal competencies are personal to the individual in their shape, size, and effect, but they are enhanced by families, teachers, youth groups, and other venues that intentionally build them. The challenge for schools is how to reach each student to ensure that he or she continues constructing this underlying architecture of personal competencies so that school learning is facilitated. Four practice guides that can enhance personal competencies are listed in this report: "Through the Student's Eyes"; "The Something Other"; "Personal Competencies in Personalized Learning"; and "Personal Competency: A Framework." (As Provided). |
