AbstractThe Dysart Unified School District (Dysart) in Arizona covers 140 square miles and serves numerous communities, including the cities of Surprise and El Mirage and some unincorporated areas of Maricopa County. At one time the fastest-growing school system in Arizona, Dysart has tripled in size since 2000. The district continues to grow, and in School Year (SY) 2010-11, the student population was just over 24,000, compared to approximately 7,000 in SY 2001-02. This interactive profile demonstrates how one school district successfully responded to explosive growth in student enrollment by undertaking a collaborative strategic planning process that covered a full spectrum of issues to improve learning. This interactive video profile is the third in a series providing readers with a real-life, practical story about how district and school leaders are working to improve student learning outcomes through the effective use of digital learning, which is defined as "any instructional practice that effectively uses technology to strengthen a student's learning experience." Digital learning encompasses so-called online learning, but also includes a wide spectrum of technological tools and practices. Critical elements include an emphasis on high-quality instruction and access to challenging content, feedback through formative assessment, opportunities for learning anytime and anywhere, and individualized instruction to ensure that all students reach their full potential to succeed in college and a career. It is important to note that the strategies will look different in each district setting, and are constantly evolving.
