AbstractThis study investigated the efficacy of constraint-induced movement therapy (CI therapy) on activities important to school participation in children with hemiparesis. Four children, ages 4-0 to 7-10 participated in an intensive CI therapy program in a clinical setting. Constraining casts were worn 24 hours daily. Therapy was delivered 6 hours daily for 16 weekdays, followed by 5 weekdays of bi-manual therapy. Measures used included an adaptation of the "School Function Assessment" (SFA) (Coster, Deeney, Haltwanger, & Haley, 1998) and the "Canadian Occupational Performance Measure" (COPM) (Law et al., 2005). The study employed a non-concurrent single-subject multiple probe design across subjects. CI therapy was found to be domain specific in its efficacy on school participation tasks from the SFA and the majority of those gains made were maintained 4-8 weeks following the end of the intervention. Parents perceived generalization of the gains to other identified daily tasks from the COPM and were satisfied with those gains.
