Abstract | There is a rise in the Latino population, a growing need to close the achievement gap, and yet there exists a paucity of research on Latino infant and child development. This phenomenological study of Latino parents explores the thoughts and feelings of a representative sample of parents pertaining to the early intervention services that their child receives. Specifically, this approach will provide these parents with a "voice" from which the reader will gain a deeper understanding of: (1) how Latino, specifically Puerto Rican, families perceive their experiences with early childhood intervention; and (2) which factors contribute to the most appropriate intervention services in order to improve the childhood development for academic success. Twelve Latino parents completed demographic surveys and were interviewed regarding their perceptions of early intervention. Through a phenomenological process the interviews were coded and analyzed for identifiable themes. The purpose of this study is to translate these themes into suggestions for early interventionists to provide efficient and effective services to the families that participate in early intervention.
