AbstractIn this study, emotional intelligence (EI) and leadership styles of public school principals were investigated. For EI, the researcher employed the college version of the Emotional Skills Assessment Process (ESAP) (Nelson & Low, 1998). The college version is referred to as the ESAP-CV (Nelson & Low, 2004). For questions of leadership style, the managerial grid leadership questionnaire by Blake and Mouton (1964) was used. The impact of people-oriented versus task-oriented leadership on EI was also examined. The purpose of the present study was to test if EI provides an underlying contribution to leadership and management independent of the influences of different managerial styles, people/task continuum, and demographic factors. The ESAP-CV consists of six indicators which served as the EI components to be evaluated. The ESAP-CV scales are Assertion, Drive Strength, Time Management, Commitment Ethic, Stress Management and Change Orientation. The first five scales are considered strengths or skills. The sixth scale, change orientation, is considered a problematic indicator, which measures the level of personal dissatisfaction. (Nelson & Low, 2011). By including only six of the thirteen scales from the original ESAP, the ESAP-CV is a shorter version of the full scale assessment. In the six EI components there are a total of 104 questions. The ESAP-CV originated from the work of Drs. Nelson and Low at Texas A&M University-Kingsville. The managerial grid originated from work completed by Drs. Blake and Mouton at the University of Texas. Results from the managerial grid determine if a person is primarily a task oriented leader or if they are more inclined to be a people oriented leader. Based on a leader or manager's level of concern for task and people, a leader or manager can be assigned to one of the five predominant managerial styles identified by Blake and Mouton. These results indicate that public school principals in Texas possessed a prevailing leadership style, Team Leadership, which was relatively high on both people and task dimensions of leadership concerns. These findings suggest the majority of public school principals in this study demonstrated relatively high concerns for both people and task. Additional findings from this study confirm the relationship between EI and leadership were found to be at a high level. In other words, public school principals participating in this study concluded that emotional intelligence may be an underlying factor influencing their leadership practices.
