AbstractThis qualitative study explored community college student development during a study abroad program. The main research question was: How do community college students perceive the impact of participation in a study abroad program on their personal development? In addition, there were seven follow-up questions generated to understand students' growth in variety of areas. The research questions were created based on Chickering's Theory of Student Development, which became the theoretical framework in this study. The data collection method consisted of four face-to-face semi-structured interviews. These in-depth, individual interviews were conducted with community college students who studied abroad. Eight themes related to the research questions were identified from participants' reflections regarding their experiences during study abroad program. Among the most significant findings was students' development in regard to their intellectual and emotional skills. Participants declared the increase in their level of independency and maturity. They became more self-directed and self-reliant individuals. Participants developed in areas of tolerance, understanding of differences, and diversity. The study participants progress across a majority of the vectors described by Chickering. Since the literature regarding education abroad in community colleges is limited, this research contributes to better understanding of the development of community college students during study abroad programs.
