AbstractCurrent researchers indicate that the superintendency continues to be male dominated and aspirants are often unaware of the strategies necessary to achieve the position. The purpose of this researcher is to identify the challenges female administrators face in their quest for the superintendency and to explore, through a qualitative phenomenological case study, the strategies they used in achieving and then safeguarding the position. The participants were purposefully selected because they were well positioned to provide meaningful answers to the issues involved in the study. They included two sitting female superintendents and two aspirants to the position, one of whom is an assistant superintendent and the other a building principal. All four informants are employed in Westchester County, New York. The research methodology included a demographic survey and a series of three, 45-minute, tape recorded, one-on-one interviews with each informant. The interview protocol consisted of 24 standardized, open-ended questions and was designed to collect data that were consistent and reliable. Triangulation was achieved by having informants submit artifacts to confirm the strategies they employed to overcome their obstacles. The Feminist Standpoint Theory, gender bias, and role change theory were considered when analyzing and coding the data. The findings reveal that the most helpful strategies were (a) obtaining family support; (b) solidifying early commitment; (c) networking and mentorship; (d) preparation in finance and budgeting; and (e) acceptance of the 2012 high stakes environment mandated by New York State. Additional realms of research included the barriers presented by stereotyping and gender bias, the career paths taken by those seeking office, the importance of political savvy, and the role of self-efficacy. This investigator may help to fill a void in the literature on women's under-representation in the superintendency. Its findings should help aspirants by alerting them to the challenges they may face and the measures for overcoming them. On a wider scale, the researcher may encourage academicians and professional associations to develop a framework for a new dialogue to better prepare women for the superintendency.
