Abstract	The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the influences of spirituality on decisions made by African American women principals at the elementary school level in schools where children of color and poverty exist in significant numbers and to gain an understanding of how African moral virtues were evidenced in the day to day professional lives of the women as they worked in school communities in urban school settings. Driving the study was the research question, "Do spirituality and practice intersect in the leadership decisions of African American women principals in urban settings?" Six African virtues of beneficence, practical wisdom, forbearance, forgiveness, improvisation, and justice provided the conceptual framework through which the experiences of the three women were filtered. A portrait was created for each woman using data gathered through observations, interviews and site visits to the three schools led by the three participants. On these occasions evidence of the six virtues emerged in varying degrees. Emergent themes including sacred spaces, spiritual friends, mentors and religiosity were given cursory attention in the dissertation.
