AbstractThe first charter school opened in 1992 and since that time the number of charter schools across the United States has been increasing at a rapid rate. As the federal government takes an interest in charter schools through policy and funding, and states enact charter school legislation the number of charter schools will continue to rise. Throughout the history of charter schools the majority of research has been on student achievement in an effort to determine if charter schools are meeting one of the established criteria for their freedom from some of the state and federal regulations to which traditional public schools must adhere. An area related to charter school that has received limited attention is that of leadership. Although numerous studies have been conducted over the past thirty years on school leadership, few have focused on the unique experience of charter school leaders. This study attempts, through the use of a comparative case study method, to better understand the demographics of the charter school leaders as well as their roles, responsibilities and functions. Two urban charter school leaders were chosen for this study. Data were gathered through interviews, observations and document review. From the data five themes regarding charter school leaders emerged; (1) the overall roles/responsibilities and functions of the leaders, (2) the role of organizational structure on the Principal's focus, (3) the impact of the Principal on school culture, (4) challenges faced and (5) the issue of leader succession. Although the role of a charter school leader does not appear to differ greatly from that of traditional public school leaders, there are situations and challenges unique to charter school leadership. In the case of both of these charter schools they were established and led by experienced leaders. Is there a difference between these two leaders and the roles of new leaders or leaders of start up schools? Is there an organizational structure that is best suited to helping charter school leaders to be successful and finally, what is the pipeline for preparing new charter school leaders?
