AbstractFor many first-generation students, college is one of the biggest transitions they will make. Community colleges' open door policy has allowed entry to a significant number of these students despite the inability to meet their immeasurable needs. Vast attention has been placed on research supporting the integration of academic and social involvement to promote success. Stakeholders at some of these community colleges have implemented practices modeled after Alexander Astin's student involvement and Vincent Tinto's student integration proposals. Still, students who are not academically prepared or who do not receive needed support with acculturating to their chosen academic environment are more at-risk of leaving college prematurely. Despite their level of preparedness, students often have some insight of their needs. Therefore, this study examined students' perceptions of retention practices at a private residential community college. Underprepared students are unlikely to take part in college activities that would provide the opportunity and setting to promote social integration. This study interviewed first-generation students at a private residential community college to examine their perceptions of the colleges' academic and social integration practices.
