Abstract | A good deal of national attention has been paid to accreditation and issues of accountability during the past year. The dominant topics have been student learning outcomes, institutional performance, and information to the public. From the Secretary of Education's Commission on the Future of Higher Education to reauthorization of the Higher Education Act, the accreditation community has been challenged to alter their practices to focus greater attention on those areas. The Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) has published 13 papers, advisories, and commentaries on outcomes, performance, and public information during the past five years. This document is a distillation of CHEA's work, summarizing key recommendations, ideas, and effective practices for accrediting organizations working with institutions and programs.
