Abstract | This report, developed pursuant to Title X, Section 1001 (d), of the National Defense Education Act of 1958, is organized in three parts. Part I is an account of the nature, scope, and volume of federally sponsored programs in colleges and universities of the United States and the institutions which participate in them. This description is directed toward the request for full information about federally sponsored programs. Part II, which is based on a study performed for the Office of Education by the Brookings Institution, reports findings concerning significant and specific concomitants of federally sponsored activity as seen in a sample of 36 colleges and universities. The institutions include 12 universities that are heavily involved in Federal programs, 12 universities that are less involved, and 12 strong undergraduate colleges. This part examines the effects of present Federal programs on institutions of higher education as factors for developing policies and procedures that will strengthen the educational programs and objectives of higher education institutions. Part III discusses the implications of the information presented in Parts I and II for policies and procedures of higher education institutions, and makes specific recommendations. A selected bibliography is included. (Contains 1 footnote and 4 tables.) [Best copy available has been provided.] (ERIC). |
