Abstract | This bulletin presents information relating to the national conference on the Office of Education statistical program which took place October 1-3, 1945. The material herein consists of the agenda of the conference, reports of the three study committees on (1) purpose and scope of the statistical program, (2) collection of data, and (3) preparation and presentation of reports, together with a brief statement of the development of the statistical program of the Office of Education to date. The conferees and consultants who participated in this conference represent various fields of educational interest, such as higher education; elementary, secondary, and vocational education; rural education; and libraries. Their report represents the composite thinking of administrator, research specialist, and statistical technician--not only consumers, but co-producers of Office of Education statistics. As a step forward in establishing sound policy and practice in the provision of statistical and research services in the U.S. Office of Education, the results of the conference are highly significant. Some of the goals outlined have been attained or are attainable in the very near future; others define a program far beyond the existing level of service. They are, therefore, being printed in bulletin form as a basis for further planning and action on the part of many special groups, who as consumers or co-producers will participate in the modification and development of statistical reporting and research projects in cooperation with the U.S. Office of Education. It is evident from results of this conference that the impact of an increasing need for solutions to many complex educational problems and an advancing science and technology for the study of these problems, demand adjustments and improvements of the Office of Education program. Two appendixes present: (1) The Conference Agenda; and (2) A Few Facts about the U.S. Office of Education Statistical Program. (Contains 2 tables and 10 footnotes.)
