AbstractThis qualitative study was designed to investigate the challenges encountered and support systems needed by digital immigrants enrolled in an online master's degree program. Participants were digital immigrants who were born before 1980 and enrolled or recently graduated from an online master's degree program. Survey data and demographic data were used to identify digital immigrants with the lowest computer fluency who were enrolled in the online master's program. Eight students were interviewed using a phenomenological narrative inquiry approach, and the interviews were analyzed for recurrent themes. Findings from the study suggested that monetary issues, flexibility of time and schedule, and other responsibilities were significant factors in digital immigrants choosing an online program over a traditional program. Findings from the study further suggested the main challenges digital immigrants faced while enrolled in an online graduate program were family challenges, technical difficulties, learner expectations, and lack of a sense of community. The results also suggested personal supports and academic supports were necessary for retention of these students. For institutions of higher education these findings may provide insight into meeting the needs of older online students.
