Abstract | European industrial doctorates are joint doctoral training projects funded by the European Union (EU) and open to all research fields. The project brings together an academic participant (university, research institution, etc.) and a company. They have to be established in two different EU Member States or associated countries. Associated partners from any country can complete the programme with training opportunities. Doctoral researchers from any nationality will have an employment contract with at least one of the participants and spend at least 50% of their time in the company. European industrial doctorates enhance the research potential and competitiveness of European companies and small and medium enterprises (SMEs), strengthen innovation capacity of universities or research institutes with commercial exploitation of their research, and develop research careers that combine scientific excellence with business innovation.
