Abstract | The Forum on Education Abroad was formed by educational institutions and study abroad program provider organizations committed to academic excellence and superior professional program management in higher education abroad. As the organization recognized by the U.S. federal government as the standards setting authority for the field, the Forum and its members are dedicated to a high level of professionalism that reflects and advances the Best Practices of the field in fair and transparent ways which place the interests of students foremost and which fosters international understanding. In recognition of these responsibilities, the Forum promulgated the field of education abroad's first comprehensive Code of Ethics for institutions at its 2008 annual conference. The Code reflects the Best Practices developed by the Forum in its role as a Standards Development Organization. This second edition of the Code of Ethics builds upon and retains the basic approach of the first, but also incorporates the experience of the past three years. The revisions are intended to enhance the Code's usefulness as a resource for institutions and organizations active in education abroad. For example, it reorganizes and more closely groups related topics and replaces bullet points with a numbered section and subsection format to allow it to be more easily referenced. Where identified, examples of redundancy have been eliminated and wording thought to be ambiguous was tightened. Language which could be interpreted as prescriptive has been eliminated in favor of that which better expresses the aspirational nature of the Code. Appended are: (1) Program Site Visits; and (2) Conflicts of Interest. (ERIC). |
