Abstract | This summary sets out the main findings of an eighteen month research project into the development of basic skills support in colleges of further education in England and Wales. The research was commissioned by the Basic Skills Agency and undertaken by the University of Central England and Bilston Community College. The research was based on statistical surveys of a significant number of colleges and an in-depth study of practice in eight colleges. Some of the main findings include: (1) The statistical surveys showed that many colleges were not collecting data relating to students needing basic skills support. Management information systems were not widely used; (2) Colleges with a structural model of basic skills support based on a central resource unit or as an extension of primary provision were more likely to be able to provide the data than those with a "mixed" model with some support provided by a central resource unit and some by individual departments or schools; (3) Most colleges screen some or all full-time students, but very few screen part-time students to identify where basic skills support is needed. Almost a third of students screened were found to need basic skills support; of those identified almost 60% received basic skills support; and (4) Students identified as needing basic skills support were more likely to stay at college, complete their courses and achieve qualifications if they received basic skills support than if they did not.
