AbstractThis study examines the writings of the French educational psychologist Guy Brousseau to see how his situation-centered theories shed light on the learning in a computer laboratory associated with a community college mathematics class. Like the community college's laboratory, Brousseau's theories intend to help students construct mathematical knowledge and reason, and they argue for the creation of situations that allow students to take responsibility for their mathematical knowledge and own it. In Brousseau's view, the word "milieu" captures the idea of a learning situation as a middle ground where students construct their mathematical knowledge as well as the idea of an environment that not only encourages all students but also accounts for each of their contributions in the reconstruction of knowledge. The study explores Brousseau's ideas on "milieu" in order to explain how his theories can be applied to an academic environment both in theory and in practice. To achieve these purposes, it explicates the meanings of his lexicon and uses the meanings to identify examples in academic environments. The study focuses on Brousscau's ideas on "milieu" and projects his viewpoint about effective and ineffective situations. The study occurs in four parts. The first part surveys students on their beliefs about responsibility in the learning of mathematics as well as their beliefs about the usefulness of mathematics and their opinions of calculus laboratories at the community college. The second part looks at many calculus laboratory worksheets for what in Brousseau's view are educational fallacies. The third part looks at student work to see what opportunities students took to own their own knowledge. The fourth part videotaped students working together to give examples of what Brousseau views as the development of a "milieu" where students build their responsibilities for the mathematical knowledge and own it.
