Abstract	The reduction of recidivism is an ongoing problem in the U.S. correctional system. There is preliminary evidence that supports the use of parenting programs to reduce recidivism, yet further validation is needed. The purpose of this study was two fold. The first phase of this sequential, explanatory, mixed methods research was to determine the relationship between participation in a parent education program and recidivism rates 1 year after release. The sample consisted of 45 individuals who participated in a parenting program and a control group of 45 individuals who were not exposed to the treatment. A chi square analysis was used to evaluate the relationship between recidivism and program completion. The second phase, a qualitative survey of the parenting program participants, was used to further explain the quantitative data gathered in phase 1. The research questions focused on (a) the relationship between participation in an 8-week educational parenting program and subsequent recidivism after 1 year of release from incarceration, and (b) participant perceptions of the various components of the parenting program. Merton's social structure theory and attachment theory proposed by Ainsworth and Bowlby formed the theoretical foundations for the study. Parenting programs had a statistically significant impact on recidivism [chi[superscript 2] (1, n = 90) = 6.56, p = 0.01]. Social change implications include more effective intervention strategies for inmates, more effective parenting, stronger family relations, and potential reduction of the multigenerational impact of incarceration.
