AbstractThe primary purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of a hypnosis program with graduate students as a stress management strategy This study identified components of the program that were perceived as beneficial in relieving stress. Additionally, this study determined the amount of time necessary for benefits to be realized. The significance of this study was to identify findings that could enhance the success rate of students enrolled in masters and doctoral counseling programs. This study, a single group multiple base line design, relied on the application of treatment to a single group of subjects in order to determine treatment effects. It included a base line, treatment (self-hypnosis), and two points of observation after the treatment started (the six-week and ten-week assessment periods). Participants were obtained from graduate counseling students enrolled in the master's program of Counseling and Educational Psychology during spring, 2009, semester at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. The participants consisted of student volunteers enrolled in the hypnosis course offered by the university. There were 11 (n = 11) graduate student participants in the study. They participated in the hypnosis program for ten consecutive weeks with one 2-hour session each week. Treatment consisted of educational information and experiential components. This study found that graduate students experience a significant amount of stress from principally sociological stressors. The self-hypnosis management program revealed a trend to bring about change in stress levels of graduate counseling students. This study recommended that graduate schools, especially counselor education programs, include a self-hypnosis program as part of the curriculum to teach future counselors self-care and effective therapeutic techniques to use with clients. Recommendations for future study include longitudinal studies to determine long term effects of self-hypnosis training.
