AbstractThe purpose of this study was to explore sandtray as a group supervision method in counselor education programs. The research centered on the personal growth and development of counselor interns as they conceptualized and reflected on cases during group supervision. Research questions guiding the process included: What is the experience of counselor interns who participate in experiential sand work in group supervision? What is the experience of the supervisor when using sand while supervising a group of counselor interns? How does the creation of sand scenes during supervision contribute to the development of counselor self awareness, case conceptualization, and group cohesion? Qualitative methodology using interpretive grounded theory (Charmaz, 2000, 2005) was selected to explore the research questions. The initial project occurred over three semesters and included two groups of interns in a training clinic on a university campus. As findings were examined during the next two years, the researcher consulted and kept a journal as she taught, supervised, and presented on the use of sand in group supervision. After analysis and synthesis of initial findings, the researcher gathered and analyzed data from a third and final sample which included practicum and internship students from the same training clinic. The overarching theme emerging from the study was the experience of connection. Three sub-themes were identified: connection to self, connection to peers, and connection to clients.
