AbstractThe primary purpose of this study was to understand why some charter schools have survived while others have not, and to determine what changes charter schools should consider making in order to survive. Several theories were applied to predict the kinds of changes that organizations should anticipate, to explain the sources of change, and to understand how charter schools, as organizations, can adapt to the surrounding environment for success. The design of the study was organized around three theories, (a) chaos, (b) change, and (c) strategic management, to address the question of what organizations can do to survive. After identifying the nature of change, additional data were collected and analyzed to form a cogent and cohesive theory. It is based on an analysis of the data accrued from a study of one successful charter school (Avalon) from more than a year, as well as from this researcher's own experience working in charter schools for more than a decade. The school's administrators and selected staff were interviewed using questions focused on concepts drawn from the three theories. The textual software "Atlas.ti" was used to arrange open coded data in categories, properties, and themes for analysis. Because the research was limited to the study of one successful charter school, the findings may not be generalizable to other charter schools, public schools, or other types of organizations. Nevertheless, based on the findings of the study, some concepts that emerged may be applicable to organizations in general. In today's stressed economy, it is crucial that organizations pay close attention to fiscal accountability, and at the same time to develop a plan to respond to organizational needs, take action, and use a road map that will lead to success. The findings of this study contribute to the ongoing discussion about how charter schools can change and adapt to the economic, social, and political environment to be successful. This study attempted to provide a clear picture showing how charter schools can succeed, adapting to the environment by identifying the sources of demands for organizational change, and by developing a road map to enable the organization to survive. Recommendations include strategies that may enable charter schools to survive and be successful. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
