Abstract | This publication focuses on curriculum integration. Integrative curriculum focuses on a theme or themes upon which two or more disciplines is organized. Curriculum integration has been proposed as a way of organizing the life skills, or "common learnings," considered essential for citizens in a democracy. The curriculum is organized around real-life problems and issues significant to adolescents and adults, applying pertinent content and skills from various subject areas or disciplines. The goal is to reflect the interdependent real world and provide greater understanding than could be obtained by looking at the parts separately. There are three schools featured in this publication--two middle schools and a high school. Each school approached its development of integrative curriculum differently to reflect its particular instructional philosophy, school mission and capacity.
