AbstractIn recent years, legislative constituents have made requests of public colleges and universities that place them center stage in the debate over the value of the financial investment of state monies and the documented outcome of institutions of public higher education. The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors affecting success rates of students at a suburban Minnesota technical college. The entering population of declared major students for three years was studied. Thirteen independent variables were tested using a correlation method which identified statistically significant relationships with the dependent variable of graduation within three years. A logistic regression analysis sought to predict which combination of variables best predicted the outcome of graduation within three years. Eight of the thirteen variables showed some significance when paired with three-year graduation rates. These include age group over 45, program outcomes of occupational diploma and certificate, first-term enrollment status, European American ethnicity status, days between application and enrollment, first-term credits completed, first-term GPA, and entering reading score on the Accuplacer. Three variables at this institution are clear indicators of a student who is more likely to graduate in three years: a strong GPA, completion of more than a full-time load of 12 credits, and a program outcome of a certificate or occupational diploma. Striving for an increase of college graduates from the United States is a goal worthy of significant attention from educators and those in a position to support education. It is hoped that the results of this study will assist with policy and programmatic intervention toward the goal of success in college.
