AbstractThe 2009 Newark Kids Count Report provides the first data on how the economic downturn in New Jersey and the nation is impacting the lives of children and families in Newark. It is no surprise that child poverty is on the rise again, after several years of progress in reducing the child poverty rate. Rising unemployment has impacted Newark residents at a far greater rate than statewide. More families have had to rely on food assistance programs. But there are some positive outcomes to report, too. More families are accessing essential benefits programs to help them weather the economic crisis. Several critical outcomes of child well-being have also improved. While these positive advances are consistent with state trends, Newark's progress has outpaced state gains in several areas. The data in this report is preliminary. Additional data from 2009 later this year will provide a more accurate picture. So far, outcomes for children and families are holding steady, despite the economic crisis. Data Sources and Technical Notes are included.
