Abstract | This study was designed to determine if a relationship exists between student characteristics and the practice of grade retention. Specifically, student characteristics include gender, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, early birth date, and students who are English Language Learners (ELL). The student sample included 1,187 participants from a large 3-A school district located in Northeast Texas. This nonexperimental quantitative research study employed a correlational research method. The purpose of this study was to determine if a relationship existed between grade retention for students who were members of certain ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds, are of specific gender, are English Language Learners (ELL), or have an early birth date. To determine if a relationship existed between student characteristics and the practice of grade retention, the researcher utilized a chi-square of significance to statistically analyze the significance between each predictor variables (student characteristics) and the outcome variable (retention). This study concluded that a significant relationship existed between grade retention and ethnicity; grade retention and socioeconomic status; and grade retention and gender. This research is significant for teachers and administrators for revising existing retention and promotion policies to reduce its practice and to recognize trends concerning the practice of grade retention and student characteristics.
