| Abstract | The qualitative study explored the training and development provided to Community College academic advisors who are members of the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA). The purpose was to investigate the factors academic advisors believe are crucial for the support of their roles as advisors. Professional, faculty, and self-identified other advisors responded to a questionnaire designed to elicit responses about the training and development provided to community college advisors. Four categories, namely, training, advising strategies, support, and resources, evolved as themes. Emerging from the data were subthemes, which included a lack of training and development; the significance of a positive relationship between advisors and advisees with regard to student success; a general lack of advising support from supervisors or higher management, colleagues or peers, and students; and an identified need for additional funding, staff, and space.
