AbstractThe purpose of this researcher was to study two alternative programs for at-risk students on Long Island, New York, in order to examine in what ways these schools may be an alternative to the traditional high school setting. Examining alternative schools can be a difficult task because of the variety of types, organizations, and populations they address. This researcher provided school administrators, teachers, and supporting staff with an understanding of these programs and the impact that they may have on at-risk students. A deconstruction of Wehlage, Rutter, Smith, Lesko, and Fernandez's research on alternative schools as communities of support in order to understand what indicators are present to create a community of support was provided. Data were collected through archival information, observations, and interviews. Demographic information on each school was researched from the New York State Education Department, the respective school district websites, and other literature available from the school districts. The 29 questions of the Advocacy Design Center (Smith, 1990) guided the researcher to understand the nature of the two alternative schools in instruction, organization, governance, accountability, and the ways the programs provided a community of support. The results of this study showed the characteristics of the two alternative schools, the extent to which the two schools provided a community of support for the students, in addition to the degree to which the alternative high schools were a true alternative to the traditional high school.
