AbstractWhile many quality character education programs have been developed over the past decade, educators and researchers would agree that there is not a "one size fits all" program for schools. For this reason the planning of character education has to be specific to a school, its faculty, and its surrounding community. To create a character education at the building level requires strong leadership to plan and implement such a program. The purpose of this study is to identify the role a principal plays in the development, implementation, and success of a character education program in middle schools that are members of Character "plus" school districts. The study surveyed both middle school teachers and administrators using an instrument to evaluate each school's character education program and how comprehensively it had been implemented. Administrators were also surveyed and/or interviewed using instruments that contained questions regarding that administrator's knowledge, interest, and experience with character education as well as their perceived role in the implementation of character education in their building. The study contained five research questions around the administrator's experience with character education as well as four hypothesis that studied the role of the administrator in the comprehensive implementation of such character education program. The results of the study indicated that while the level of knowledge, experience, and interest in character education varied from principal to principal, there was a significant relationship between the involvement of the principal and how comprehensive the character education program was implemented in the school.
