Abstract	The purpose of this study was to look at the relationship between selected Texas public school superintendents and school boards to determine the communication factors that help to make for stronger relationships. This study attempted to describe the relationship between the superintendent and school board in terms of effective communication strategies. Additionally, the study looked at and identifies effective and recognized techniques and strategies that support the Team of Eight concept. This was a mixed methods study using quantitative and qualitative techniques. Survey research was used to identify perspectives on the nature of effective communication techniques between school superintendents and their school boards. Qualitative research strategies such as personal interviews and open-ended survey questions were used to obtain a clear perspective on effective communication techniques and strategies. The population targeted for the quantitative portion of the study was the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) Superintendent of the Year program candidates (2002-2007) and their school board presidents. The findings from this study indicated that superintendents and school boards need open, honest, two-way communications. The majority of superintendents surveyed and interviewed reported they used the telephone the most to communicate with their board members, especially in emergency situations. Email was the second most used communication strategy for sharing informal or general information regarding updates or happenings around the district. The data collected from surveys and personal interviews agree and reinforce each other with a couple of exceptions. The interviewed superintendents had much more contact time with board members than the surveyed superintendents reported. The interviewed Superintendent of the Year winners reported having twice the amount of contact with their boards as the surveyed superintendents. These superintendents also offered some additional communication strategies that were not obtained in the survey responses. Some of the techniques shared were daily text messages, small private lunch meetings, personality surveys and the use of approved administrative liaisons.
