AbstractAnalysing data from the 2005 National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER) Survey of Employer Use and Views of the Vocational Education and Training (VET) System, this report looks at the reasons why employers train their workers. Four different types of training are focused on: vocational qualifications; the employment of apprentices and trainees; nationally recognised training; and unaccredited training. The report highlights that there is no simple fix to increasing employer investment in training which has generally not been a core component of long-term business planning. Appendices include: (1) Glossary; and (2) Supporting figures and tables. (Contains 2 footnotes, 9 tables, and 1 figure.) [Funding for this document is provided through the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations. Additional information relating to this research is available in the support document "Modelling the reasons for training choices: Technical paper."
