Abstract	Every child deserves an education that allows the opportunity to achieve his or her dreams. This is the shared belief of The James Irvine Foundation and the Bridgespan Group. Unfortunately, California's education system is failing to provide young people the foundation for success in adulthood. Irvine believes that young people must be offered different ways of getting to the same destination: success in high school, college and career. The Foundation sees the need for a "multiple pathways" approach that recognizes the diversity of student interests and abilities--one that engages students in academically rigorous work and also demonstrates its relevance to the real world. After four years of pursuing a strategy to advance multiple pathways in California, Irvine asked Bridgespan to assess the state of the multiple pathways field and to make recommendations to strengthen it. Bridgespan was eager to undertake this research, as growing evidence shows that the multiple pathways approach, combining rigorous academics with career education, holds the promise of increasing academic engagement and achievement, lowering high school dropout rates and boosting students' future earning power. Bridgespan consulted with a 24-member advisory committee representing the multiple pathways field and met with more than 60 additional leaders in the field through interviews and a focus group. Research also included interviews with a few prominent skeptics of the multiple pathways approach, a review of available secondary research and an examination of the landscape of organizations in the field. The findings and recommendations from this field assessment are discussed in this paper.
