AbstractThe conflicting pressures of supply and demand often raise significant challenges for providers of languages for adults. Numbers of learners are inconveniently patchy, trends in take-up often short lived and provision vulnerable due to funding pressures. This makes institution-based curriculum planning very precarious. The answer, it seems more often than not, lies in looking beyond institutional offers of provision. There are plenty of examples of effective practice where federations, networks or partnerships of providers have come together to address what is perceived to be a common problem. Speaking the same language aims to share some of the examples of good practice. The focus is therefore on replicable models, rather than one-off projects. It explores some of the common features of collaborative and partnership working, such as what are the drivers behind collaboration; what motivates individuals as well as providers to collaborate; how is collaboration planned and managed. This book contains six sections. The Introduction examines the different kinds of partnership and presents the aims of the book and gives its target audience. "Local and Regional Partnerships," presents case studies of Leicestershire and Leicester City Learning Partnership Languages Strategy Group; Black Country Pathfinder--Networks for Excellence; Cheshire; and Brasshouse Language Centre. "European Partnerships" presents case studies of RAOUL and ALLEGRO. "Process of Partnership" examines what the case studies tell us about partnerships and describes the four stages of the partnership process. "Tools for Partnerships" examines what supports partnership working, motivation, commitment and leadership, bridging the gap between partnership and organization, communication, and realistic goals. The concluding section presents a checklist entitled "So You Think That Partnership is for You?" (ERIC).
