AbstractThis book provides 14 profiles of innovative and transformational leadership at community colleges. The experience and knowledge shared by the contributors demonstrate how community colleges are adapting creatively to rapidly changing economies, technologies, and education standards. Each of the chapters tells a story of unique challenges and equally unique responses by community college leaders who built alliances, systems, and programs, often facing significant obstacles and even active resistance. These leaders share their successes, their failures, and the risks they took to strengthen their institutions, to build alliances with school systems, and to create new systems. Following a foreword by George R. Boggs and an Introduction by the editors, this volume contains these chapters: (1) From Challenges to Opportunities (John E. Roueche, M. Melissa Richardson, Phillip W. Neal, and Suanne D. Roueche); (2) Guilford Technical and Community College: A Story of Patience Persistence, Perception, and Change (Donald W. Cameron); (3) Chaffey College: Transforming Basic Skills for Successful Student Learning (Marie Kane); (4) Iowa Central Community College: A Phenomenal Experience (Bob Paxton); (5) Transforming Morton College (Brent Knight); (6) Richland College: Whole People, Whole Organization, Whole Lot of Fun (Stephen K. Mittelstet); (7) El Paso Community College: Climbing Ladders to Success (Richard M. Rhodes); (8) The College of Southern Nevada: A Journey Toward a Shared Vision (Richard Carpenter); (9) Cuyahoga Community College: Building One College With Second-Generation Technology (Jerry Sue Thornton); (10) Community College of Denver: Triumph Over Challenge (Christine Johnson); (11) Florida Community College at Jacksonville: Institutional Advancement Through Change, Agility, and Innovation (Steven Wallace); (12) Kentucky Community and Technical College System: Building a New System (Michael B. McCall); (13) Progressive Leadership and Professional Development in the Louisiana Community and Technical College System (Walter G. Bumphus); (14) Tallahassee Community College: Responding to the Challenge of the Internet Age (William Law); and Conclusion: Common Themes Among Creative Community Colleges (John E. Roueche, M. Melissa Richardson, Phillip W. Neal, and Suanne D. Roueche.). An index is included. (Contains 9 figures and 1 table.) (ERIC).
