Abstract | This book has been written to help educators investigate their attitudes toward students, to consider the extent to which students should become the focus of educational programming, and to improve learning outcomes for every student. With real stories from real schools, this book offers an alternative vision of school improvement. Instead of a one-size-fits-all approach, the book presents practical strategies which put students first. The real-life examples given herein place students at the center of the equation and treat them as individuals who are born to learn. Written as a resource for professional development, this book study tool provides a refreshing look at the possibilities of student and educators. Also featured are the 12 R's, which include being Reflective, Rigorous, Respectful, Responsive, Resilient, and more. The book is divided into six chapters, each with a specific focus that is introduced in a brief section overview. Following the overview is a series of short sections that expand on the chapter topic. Each section can be read in less than five minutes, while the longest chapter can be read in about a half an hour. This format allows for immediate reflection upon, and discussion about, the ideas presented in each section at group meetings. Finally, the end of each chapter contains discussion questions for the preceding material. These questions are designed to help readers reflect back on the material throughout the entire chapter and to consider the relationship among the topics. (ERIC). |
