AbstractAdolescents struggle with many types of conflicts in their lives. They must define relationships with friends, teachers, parents, and themselves. Disagreements will arise, and without the proper training, many teens are left feeling angry, confused, or depressed. Teaching middle school students to deal with conflict productively at an early age will help them throughout their lives. In this article, the author shares her six steps to conflict resolution: (1) You must have the desire to solve the conflict; (2) Both parties must agree to be honest and listen to one another; (3) You must begin all discussions with "I feel..." and never use "You..." in a sentence; (4) Apologize for the reactions you caused; (5) Agree to treat one another differently in the future; and (6) Explain how much you care about the other person.
