AbstractIn the early 1990s, the University of Rhode Island (URI) had a reputation as the number one party school in America, and data showed that the number of URI students engaging in binge drinking was significantly higher than the national average. In order to salvage its reputation and the health of its students, administrators undertook a campus recovery program, Common Ground, aimed at curbing student alcohol use on and off campus. The first phase of the project raised student awareness that URI undergraduates support stronger alcohol policies and increased enforcement of those policies, while the second phase focused on informing students about increased enforcement efforts both on and off campus and about drinking and driving laws. After a summary of the specific efforts undertaken, the author provides some general recommendations for how boards can encourage campus administrators to help curb alcohol abuse using strategies similar to those from the Common Ground program.
