AbstractThe American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) designed an invitational conference "Preparing, Retaining and Supporting a High Quality Teacher Workforce" held in October 2005. It was convened at the Wingspread Conference Center and brought together presidents and chancellors from universities, state education officials, and other state policy leaders to focus on teacher attraction, retention and support. Conferees believe it is the first national conversation engaging only state and university decision-makers focusing on education policy. The key conference question was, "How can public schools, universities, and their states do a better job of preparing a high quality teacher work force that will ensure more disadvantaged, under-represented students complete high school and go on to college?" Conference activities were designed to enable participants to review the latest evidence about teacher turnover rates and related challenges, and to take part in small, focused discussions and general sessions aimed at generating action steps to improve preparation, retention, and teacher support. Undergirding the Wingspread Conference were two premises that engendered thought-provoking dialogue and consensual conclusions. (ERIC).
