| Abstract | The 2006 National Resiliency Response Initiative for Katrina's Kids is a systematic approach to providing resiliency support to the over 200,000 children victimized by one of the worst natural disasters in American history. From the Gulf States region, children suffered trauma during and after Hurricane Katrina as they became displaced young individuals, newly integrated in other neighborhoods and local schools. For the Gulf States and the new recipient states, the immediate and long term necessity became how to implement a child-focused mental health strategy and psychological support program for these children and youth affected by Hurricane Katrina. If left unattended, their mental instability may manifest in anti-social behavior and other school-related learning problems. These critical psychological needs may be the result of post traumatic stress disorder. To address the need, a structured, long range approach to resiliency care is vital. The Heroic Choices program for children and youth is a comprehensive, 12 month delivery of interwoven resiliency trainings involving the caregiver/parent, mentor and child to guarantee the ability to bounce back from such a trauma with the will to thrive and positively grow throughout the coming years.
