Abstract | School Reform in a Global Society is about how a silent, wealthy upper class in the United States waited until the end of the Twentieth Century to transform America into something it once was during the Age of the Robber Barons. Known today as neoliberals, this nostalgic elite, craving the return of the unregulated capitalism of the nineteenth century, see themselves as the new Victorian imperialists. Using the term globalization to mean economic colonialism, their corporate policies force Third World governments, parents and children alike to accept schooling that disregards and damages their cultures. Even in the United States they discovered they could not create their nineteenth century imperial nirvana without first forcing schools to develop an obedient working class that swore allegiance to them. This social history of schools, capitalism, colonialism and its child named globalization is about how those who crave wealth and power are willing to gamble away the lives of American youth to satisfy their dreams of past economic glory. The following four features exist in this book: (1) The primary distinguishing feature of the text is its multidisciplinary approach in understanding the significance of schooling in forming and reforming societies; (2) It demonstrates that the power of schools is based on those who, for their own purposes, want to control schools-not those who work and learn in them: (3) The book expands and contributes to the definitions of terms such as neoliberal, liberal, indigenous, and neoconservative and conservative; and (4) The book focuses on contemporary social problems and how schools and globalization intermix in our day-to-day lives. The following chapters are included: (1) Reflections of a Different America: Surviving Ideology; (2) How Eras Change: A History of Neoliberalism; (3) Postcolonial Educational Reformers: A Global Perspective; (4) Schools in Global Society: From a Family of Nations to a Global Village; (5) Globalization, Schools and Children in Developing Nations; (6) The Education of Mean Middle Managers; (7) Deviants, Nostalgia and Neoliberal Reformers: The American Social Experience; (8) Victorian Classism: Capitalism of Liberty; and (9) Consequences and Quagmires: Combating Neoliberalism's Reform of American's Schools. This book concludes with an Epilogue. (ERIC). |
