Abstract | Help young students master concepts of print, phonemic awareness, and alphabet knowledge--the key predictors of early literacy success and school readiness. This resource will show what children need to know about print in order to become successful readers, how to connect children's development with learning about print, and how to provide a print-rich environment. Integrated strategies address various print concepts; demonstrate how to implement the strategies; and provide accommodations for English-language learners, atypical learners, and advanced learners. After a glossary and an introduction, this book is divided into the following chapters: (1) What Young Children Need to Know about Print; (2) Connecting Child Development with Learning about Print; (3) Providing a Print-Rich Environment; (4) Skills and Strategies: An Overview; (5) Strategies for Developing Concepts of Print; (6) Phonemic Awareness: Moving from Oral Language to Beginning Links with Print; and (7) Alphabet Knowledge. A list of references and an index conclude the book. (ERIC). |
