AbstractThree papers comprise this symposium on women and career development. "Enhancing the Career Success of Women Faculty: Mentoring as a Human Resource Development (HRD) Initiative in Higher Education" (Sharon K. Gibson) explores mentoring of women faculty, focusing on the key dimensions of roles and functions, outcomes, gender, and formal and informal mentorships. It suggests the need for the HRD profession to assume an integral role in advancing research on mentoring and other career development initiatives for women in higher education. "Emotions in Women's Career Development: A Merging of Literatures" (Rose Opengart, Laura Bierema) is a critical review of the literatures of emotional intelligence, emotion work, and women's career development that was conducted to examine relationships, similarities, and differences between emotions and women's learning and career development. Common themes are identified, future research questions are posed, and implications for women and organizations are drawn. "The Meaning of Korean Women's Experience of Reentering the Workforce" (Yu-Jin Lee, Gary N. McLean) reports a qualitative study of the experiences of reentry women using phenomenology that identified seven themes: giving up the fantasy of becoming a happy homemaker; feeling not welcomed; first come, first served; feeling empowered; feeling guilty; being vulnerable to the patriarchal workplace culture; and redefining one's meaning of work. All papers contain substantial references. (YLB)
